Hidden Cameras In Boardroom And Toilets

Why pay attention to the many reports of covert cameras? They can be like termites or cockroaches, if you see one, there are probably many more in place you do not want them to be. Professional sweeps may be in order.

Leeds Owner Orders Security Sweep, Finds Hidden Cameras In Boardroom And Toilets

Leeds United’s new owner Massimo Cellino has sparked a police investigation after secret cameras were discovered in the Elland Road boardroom and toilets.

Cellino asked for a security sweep of the stadium after an independent QC overturned the Football League’s decision to block his takeover earlier this week, during which the covert filming equipment was discovered.

West Yorkshire Police were subsequently called and have confirmed they are investigating the matter, with Cellino believing they were installed without permission from the necessary people at the club.

Police are still trying to uncover why […]

Students may not be the only victims of restroom cameras in Davenport IA school

An affidavit filed in federal court April 14, 2014, offered new details into why investigators think Ian Dishon Isabel is responsible for placing those cameras, and possibly others, in restrooms at the school.

Isabel, 29, was charged after recording devices were found “covertly placed” in two stalls at Hayes Elementary School on Concord Street Wednesday, April 2, 2014.  Isabel was in charge of the Stepping Stones after-school program at Hayes Elementary.

The affidavit said a custodian found a small gray junction box hanging on a wall opposite a toilet in a girls’ restroom at the school on April 2.  The […]

Credit Card-Reading Spy Camera Found in the NYC Subway

Hidden cameras abound. Knowing how to spot them can help protect you against credit card skimming. Skimming involves attaching a device to a card reader that can copy your card data- but the bad guys also need your pin number. That is where the cameras come into play. The camera would be placed in a location that can see the buttons as you enter your pin number.

This hidden camera and a skimming device were found by a customer earlier this week in a vending machine at the 59 Street-Columbus Circle station. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is warning New Yorkers to keep an eye out for hidden cameras installed in MetroCard machines.

Hidden camera updates: Tampa, FL company; Ft. Meyers, FL rental home; Fredericton YMCA, New Brunswick, CA

It’s worth paying attention to even the small incidents of attempted spying. Eavesdropping equipment is cheap and easily obtained. News reports are of the few who get caught, but there are many more that go undetected.  Contact us if you have concerns for your place of business.

Ex-employee’s lawsuit claims Tampa company didn’t act on covert videos

Days after the chief financial officer of a Tampa maintenance company was accused of recording videos of female employees using the bathroom and showering, the former information technology employee who exposed the chief  financial officer’s alleged actions has sued the company and his ex-boss.

On March 28, Jeremy Lenkowski, the former information technology director for MaintenX , filed a lawsuit accusing the company’s president and vice president, among others, of failing to act after Lenkowski showed them videos he’d discovered on CFO […]

Illinois Eavesdropping Law Voided

Audio recordings are an easy thing to accomplish, almost everyone’s phone today has recording capability. It’s very important to understand your state’s eavesdropping laws if you ever consider recording phone calls or recording any conversation for that matter, even if the conversation takes place in public.  It also is important to understand these laws when drafting corporate rules and regulations regarding audio recording in the workplace.

For a recording to be legal, most states require the approval by just one party of the conversation, this is often easily fulfilled since the person doing the recording is usually part of the conversation.  There are a number of states, though, that require all parties to give their consent. Recording of phone calls on a company wide basis, though, requires consulting a qualified attorney since incoming calls may be coming from states with different laws than your state.  Illinois was one state […]

New presidential limo in the works.

Detroit News, March 11, 2014

Washington— The Department of Homeland Security plans to award a contract for the design of the next-generation presidential limousine by late August, to be ready by the time the next president takes office in 2017.

According to a contract proposal posted last week by the U.S. Secret Service on the government’s contracting site, the administration plans to award the contract by Aug. 29, “based on best value to the government.”

The project is in four phases, the Secret Service said. “Phase 1, armor development, is currently underway. Phase 2 work will include integration of the armor design developed during Phase 1 of the program. Phase 2 requirements will include selection and integration of final automotive components, chassis, interior, exterior, and test vehicle fabrication and automotive component testing. Phase 3 will be focused on automotive validation and Phase 4 production of vehicles,” said the proposal, […]

Hidden camera footage surfaces of Supreme Court debate

Here is an example of what could happen if covert audio or video eavesdropping took place in any corporate meeting.  Our concern is not as much about what was said as it is about the backlash from having any type of embarrassing situation displayed publicly, whether on YouTube or any other media.

Hidden camera footage of what appeared to be Supreme Court proceedings from earlier this week surfaced on Thursday, offering one the of the first public recordings of the High Court’s proceedings.

A video posted on YouTube and recorded by 99 Rise, a group that supports tougher campaign finance laws, shows proceedings leading up to and during a rare protest that took place in the court Wednesday.

It’s good enough for the Irish… Department of Finance regularly sweeps for bugs

It should be accepted practice in all businesses. The level and frequency needed for corporate countermeasures sweeps relates to the value of information being discussed. But it is not just measured as a dollar value of a few pieces of data- the loss of confidential information can also affect stock prices, product announcements, market positioning, law suits, shareholder relations, executive protection, and many other areas.

Feb 21, 2014; The Irish Times

The Department of Finance and the National Treasury Management Agency carry out regular sweeps to ensure they are not subject to any bugging or surveillance. Minister for Finance Michael Noonan confirmed the steps were taken due to the commercial sensitivity of issues being discussed within the department. However, other departments declined to reveal if they undertake similar counter-surveillance measures.

In response to parliamentary questions from Fine Gael TDs Brendan Griffin and Noel Harrington, Mr Noonan said he was “aware of the importance of maintaining security given the commercially sensitive meetings held in the […]

Admitted stalker and eavesdropper appeals conviction

Melbourne, AU, Herald Sun News

A MAN who planted tracking devices on his ex-wife then threatened to “f*** up” her new lover has launched an appeal, despite pleading guilty to his offending.

Peter John Gale planted tracking devices, and a listening device, on his wife Kaye’s car three days before she walked out of their 21-year marriage in September 2012.  Weeks later he also fixed a similar tracking device to the car of Darren Edgell, Ms Gale’s new partner.

But that was just the beginning of his obsession as he struggled to cope with the breakdown of his marriage. In the weeks after his wife left and moved to regional Victoria, Gale sent her dozens of text messages, changed a password to one of her email accounts and accessed her mobile phone records – forcing her to change her number twice.

He started appearing wherever she was, and at the height of his […]

Julia Lipnitskaia’s coach blames Russian media and a bugged locker room for skater’s performance.

From Yahoo Sports: SOCHI, Russia – Julia Lipnitskaia’s coach blamed the Russian media’s intense coverage of the teen figure skating star for her subpar performance in the Sochi Olympics figure skating competition.

Eteri Tutberidze said reporters bugged the locker room at Lipnitskaia’s practice rink in Moscow with listening devices after the 15-year-old left the Winter Games to train for the ladies individual competition. The coach also accused the media of stalking Lipnitskaia’s family in her hometown of Nizhny Bardym, a village in the Ural Mountains with a population of just 300.

Tutberidze said the media coverage got so bad that Lipnitskaia had to be evacuated from the practice rink every night to escape reporters. Also, Lipnitskaia had to be booked on numerous flights in order to keep her travel itinerary a secret from the press.

The coach spoke out against the media circus on Thursday after Lipnitskaia fell […]

Listening Devices Found in Jakarta Governor’s Residence

By Jakarta Globe on February 20, 2014.

Jakarta. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) members conducting a sweep of Governor Joko Widodo’s official residence allegedly discovered listening devices spread throughout the home in the second spying attempt on a prominent member of the opposition party, an official revealed on Thursday.

Three devices were found in the governor’s official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, in December of last year, PDI-P secretary general Tjahjo Kumolo said on Thursday. The spy equipment, which could allegedly listen-in on Joko’s private conversations, was found in his bedroom, living room and dining room — the governor’s preferred meeting room in the house.

“We searched Jokowi’s house, there were three spying devices,” Tjahjo told the Indonesian news paper Kompas. “It feels like someone is trying to intimidate us.”

The party’s chair Megawati Sukarnoputri has reportedly been under surveillance for some time, Tjahjo said. A man was once found snooping around the former Indonesian president’s home, he explained.

“Someone […]

Bug sweeps were daily routine for News Corp

Corporate eavesdropping events rarely make the news. Most companies strive to handle incidents in house and keep them out of the press, so there are very few accurate statistics available. This report emerged from the News Corp trial and reveals how serious many businesses are about protecting their information and daily conversations.

News Corp ordered daily sweeps for bugs at its offices amid fears rivals were eavesdropping, court told.

News Corp executives ordered daily sweeps for bugs at its London offices over fears rivals were eavesdropping on its BSkyB takeover plans, the hacking trial heard today. Head of security Mark Hanna, a Gulf war Veteran, was in charge of hunting for covert listening devices in the executive offices and suites.

The routine searches of the News International headquarters were increased to daily sweeps when Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp was plotting its BSkyB takeover, the court heard.

Peep on a Rope: Sochi Official Reveals Hotel Shower Video

Attempting to demonstrate that hotel vandalism has occurred, Dmitry Kozak revealed a bit too much “We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day,”

From the Wall Street Journal

SOCHI, Russia—Rooms without doorknobs, locks or heat, dysfunctional toilets, surprise early-morning fire alarms and a Welcome Wagon of stray dogs: These are the initial images of the 2014 Winter Olympics that foreign journalists have blasted around the world from their officially assigned hotels—and the wave of criticism has rankled Russian officials.

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, seemed to reflect the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi’s big debut out of bias against Russia. “We have […]

Espionage history: The Laird’s Lug (the Lord’s Ear)

In the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle, evidence of eavesdropping technique is there for all visitors to witness. The Laird’s Lug (the “lord’s ear”) is what looks like a type of ventilation hole over the fireplace. It was used by the lord of the castle to eavesdrop on his guests when they gathered in the hall below.  A number of other castles have similar features. In 1984 Mikhail Gorbachev asked for it to be bricked up prior to having a meeting scheduled there.

Air ducts and ventilation holes still provide an eavesdropping vantage point for the modern spy.  I was working in an office late one night, and even though I was the only one there, I heard two voices behind me. I knew I was alone, but I had clearly heard two people talking.  I could understand their conversation perfectly.  After putting the paranormal theories out of my mind, I […]

No Butts (dialing) – Airport Chairman’s Wiretapping Lawsuit Dismissed

Back in December we reported on a case where Jim Huff, a member of the Cincinnati airport board, filed a lawsuit against airport administrative assistant Carol Spaw stating he accidentally called her while discussing firing another board member and the woman recorded the call and shared the information, citing the Federal Wiretap Act. [Law suit cites Federal Wiretap Act www.upi.com] On Friday, January 25, U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning ruled that even though the cell phone call was accidental, Spaw was under no obligation to hang up. Advice here: protect yourself from "pocket dialing". Make sure your phone locks when you turn it off and put it away and also consider using a case that protects the keypad or buttons from redialing (if your phone still has buttons). Bluetooth earpieces are also a big vulnerability. Many of them will redial with a long press of the earpiece button. Shoving it in a pocket or even into a case could inadvertently squeeze the button initiating a redial even if when phone itself was locked. Some earpieces have an actual on-off switch, that is the best way to keep it off when it is not in use. Some Motorola earpieces will flip the mouthpiece to close and turn off, but (I found out the hard way) even when they were flipped closed, a firm squeeze would still wake up the phone and redial the last number.

Electronic Espionage Countermeasures for Executives and Executive Protection

By Charles Patterson, Jan 24, 2014

Corporate espionage strikes fear in the hearts of many executives, and rightly so. The threat is real, often not visible and not understood, and damage to the company (and to individuals) can be severe.  Spying comes in many forms and guises.  Cyber crimes and network hacking grab most of the headlines. They are certainly huge problems and require serious attention, but modern technology puts many advanced eavesdropping techniques in the hands of the general population as well as criminals. If you are responsible for the protection of executives, it is helpful to understand the threat that eavesdropping poses to the principals and their corporate concerns.

Corporate Threat

In the corporate arena, there are significant espionage threats from nation states, foreign competition, and other powerful adversaries. But there is also potential danger from others closer to home. Consider that most serious crimes usually begin with some […]

CES 2014: New gadgets = new spy gear… Consumer devices to help kids spy on mom and a programmable Mom to spy on everyone, MiniDrones, and a “Jumping Sumo”

It should be well known that consumer products often have other nefarious purposes (think baby monitors and tiny voice recorders). Watching what has been revealed at the International CES, (the major consumer electronics expo in Las Vegas) shows some neat high-tech toys that may be worth paying attention to, not necessarily due to any inherent any evil intent, but they show how some clever and formerly advanced technology is becoming less expensive and readily available to the public to do with as they will.

Spying on Mom: Tyche, by AIBrain, Inc.

This was described as “A $200 robot companion for kids that follows the voice command: ‘Go to the kitchen, find Mom, take a picture of her and return here.’ A cellphone provides processor, cameras, microphones, sensors.” It’s probably supposed to be fun, but what if mom doesn’t want […]
