Need secure conversations? Try the new Privacy Suite in the Rolls Royce Phantom.

Rolls Royce has introduced their new "Privacy Suite" for the Phantom extended wheelbase model. No more listening in (from the front seat) to the conversations of the CEO or celebrity, in the rear. The Privacy Suite uses electrochromatic glass (also known as "smart glass") to separate the front seats from the rear compartments. They have also added a "frequency specific" sound-absorption material that inhibits the transmission of conversations from the rear to the front of the vehicle.

Nashville man spied on co-worker with baby monitor

Nashville, TN, police arrested a man after they say he used a baby monitor to spy on a female coworker in her Sylvan Heights home. Baby monitors and other off-the-shelf communications devices work well as tools for eavesdropping and surveillance. Be on the lookout for any unauthorized or out-of-place devices that may be spotted in your place of business or your home. ...and you may want to check under your bed before you go to sleep tonight.

From bugs to bombs, Seabees protect US embassies from threats.

A military unit that helped secure U.S. diplomatic compounds for decades has seen its mission grow as security threats have escalated from bugs buried in embassy walls to car bombs driven up to embassy gates. A small group of Navy Seabees, known as the Naval Support Unit - State Department, has played a largely behind-the-scenes role implementing technical measures to combat threats abroad since the 1960s.

Ultrasonic eavesdropping and microphone jamming- researching Cuban ailments

Kevin Fu and Wenyuan Xu, researchers with the University of Michigan and Zhejiang University in China, study the use of ultrasonic waves that may have been a possible source of recent ailments of diplomats living in Cuba. Causes of the symptoms of the diplomats and their families have not yet been confirmed, but one of the possible causes offered was the use of some sort of sonic "weapon".  Hearing about this caused Fu and Xu to wonder if ultrasound could be the culprit. Their research tries to explain possible ways the effects that were described could have been created leading them to also investigate ultrasonic eavesdropping and microphone jamming.

Evi and Randy Quaid may have actually been bugged

From the “just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean…” department.

Reported on Page Six

Evi and Randy Quaid might be justified in some of their paranoia. They say they were among the victims of wiretapping private eye Anthony Pellicano and his inside man at the Los Angeles Police Department, Sgt. Mark Arneson.

Evi and Randy Quaid

Randy, 67, who was nominated for an Oscar and other awards for his serious dramatic roles, was best known for his Cousin Eddie character in the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movies before his career derailed about eight years ago.

The Quaids claimed to be victims of “Star Whackers,” a secret cabal that they say are responsible for the deaths of David Carradine and Heath Ledger. The couple said Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan were also targets.

Now, they say they’ve learned they were part of a recently settled class action suit against the LAPD and Arneson, who was […]

School district worker arrested- some people still don’t realize eavesdropping is illegal!

If you are going to record -video or audio- there is a good chance you may be breaking the law. You may have good motivation, but don’t expect the courts – or your co-workers- to see it that way.
Such devices can appear anywhere, at home or in the work place.

from the Pocono Record

Pleasant Valley School District Director of Support Services Joshua Krebs was arraigned on wiretapping charges Tuesday. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 26.

Court papers allege Krebs electronically eavesdropped on conversations in the elementary school faculty break room in April 2016.

Krebs was still working at the school district as of Tuesday’s arraignment.

Krebs, 37, of Kunkletown, his hands clasped in front of him, appeared calm and did not speak at the arraignment. He sported a full beard, closely cut hair, and wore a gray suit with a blue shirt and gray patterned tie […]

TSCM Sweep discovers bugging device that had been in place for two years- Ghana

A look into the anatomy of a bug. Reports reveal that a bugging device was found installed in a Coat of Arms plaque in the office of the Ghana Lands and Natural Resources Minister. A previous occupant of the office claimed to have installed the bugging device over two years ago for his own security, but for the past two years the office was occupied by someone else who was unaware of the bug's existence. A new minister who took office in January, 2017,  had the TSCM sweep performed that found the bug.

TSCM and privacy protection for attorneys and their clients.

Lawyers must protect communications and information for both their own firms as well as their clients. TSCM electronic security sweeps are necessary for insuring confidentiality.

I was recently interviewed by Sharon Nelson and John Simek on the Legal Talk Network for their Digital Detectives Podcast. I gave an overview of TSCM and reviewed a number of concerns, especially those facing lawyers today.

Sharon and John run Sensei Enterprises, Inc. a nationally known digital forensics, information security and technology support company serving the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. On their monthly podcast, Sharon and John typically cover cyber threats, digital technology, and computer investigations for attorneys and others in legal fields.

As a lawyer, sometimes paranoia is a good thing. Legal professionals are constantly handling sensitive information that needs protection, whether it’s details about a case or client data. In this episode of Digital Detectives, hosts Sharon Nelson and John […]

Does staff know your confidentiality policies? Superbowl ad brings home some pointers.

Too often employees do not understand that they are the caretakers of privileged information and the must treat it with confidentiality and respect.

Even basic information such as the time and place of a meeting could give an enemy or competitor a chance to set up unauthorized surveillance or other attack. Be sure to educate your employees, staff, contractors, and meeting participants that the information they may be receiving is private and confidential and is not to be shared.

Some of these points were brought home by the 2017 Superbowl ad for Avocados From Mexico.  It’s a cute ad, but whether you like avocados or not, it does points out that many people may not understand the value and sensitive nature of what is being discussed in your meetings.

Turning off sound-masking, internal leaks, posting meeting info on social media are all problems of the “Secret Society”.
