Rolls Royce has introduced their new “Privacy Suite” for the Phantom extended wheelbase model. The Privacy Suite was unveiled at the 2018 Chengdu Auto Show taking place at the Chengdu International Exhibition & Convention Center in China.

No more listening in (from the front seat) to the conversations of the CEO or the celebrity in the rear.

The Privacy Suite uses electrochromatic glass (also known as “smart glass”) to separate the front seats from the rear compartments. It works similarly to LCD glass, at the touch of a button it will go from clear to totally opaque blocking all visual access to the rear.

They have also added a “frequency specific” sound-absorption material that inhibits the transmission of conversations from the rear to the front of the vehicle to protect conversations against eavesdropping.

The rear passenger can summon the driver via an intercom, and the driver can also signal the rear passenger that they wish to communicate, but it is up to the passenger to to answer or reject the call.

“Throughout history, the power brokers and history makers have negotiated some of the most historical agreements in confidence thanks to the ‘luxury of privacy’ afforded to them by the rear compartment of a Rolls-Royce,” the automaker said in a statement.

There is also an aperture for passing documents or small objects between the front and rear seats, again controlled by and viewable by the passengers.

Privacy and confidentiality is important. As insider threat grows, from vehicle sweeps to electrochromatic glass, more and more steps are being taken to increase privacy and secure conversations.
